India is one of the largest agricultural producers globally, but agricultural growth in India has been slower than in other parts of the world. A significant challenge faced by Indian farmers is the lack of knowledge about how to implement technology in their fields. Many farmers still rely on traditional farming practices, which are less productive or effective in today’s digital realm.
To address these challenges, various initiatives have been taken by the Indian government and other organizations to promote the use of technology in agriculture. Precision farming is a technique that tremendously benefits farmers in optimizing water, fertilizers, and other resources. Similarly, crop monitoring with the help of drones, sensors, and satellite imagery can help farmers detect crop health issues, improve yields, and minimize losses.
In addition, agriculture in India is region-specific because of the diverse agro-climatic conditions across the country. Different regions of India have different soil types, rainfall patterns, temperature regions, and other climatic factors that determine the crops that will grow there. For example, wheat and rice are the major crops grown in the northern plains, while in the southern region, crops like coconut, coffee, and spices are prevalent. Advancements in the agritech prove that crops like paddy, limited to the south of areas of India, can grow on hilly or mountainous terrains.
